This sign was located along the modern pathway that US Highway 40 takes through these mountains. The sign was on the northern side of the highway. Water flowing to the west was destined for the Pacific Ocean, while water flowing to the east was destined for the Atlantic Ocean.
In the 1950s, these signs would have had writing and scribbling on them after a few years. Nobody writes on them anymore, but you can see that there were stickers on the front of this sign when the photo was taken. Other signs in Colorado have gotten it worse, and these stickers are a familiar sight to most residents here now. The graffiti has changed, but the vandals have not.
