Image Dating Comments
This image has been dated to the period between 1925-’35 by the Denver Public Library. It was likely captured very close to 1925 or possibly even slightly sooner. This is based on the size of the children compared to another photo of this family from Berthoud Pass in 1917.
Comments & Discussion
This photo shows Harry Rhoads’s family: Sade, Harriet, and Mary Elizabeth Rhoads. Harry was behind the camera.
Notice how the sign says it is 25 miles to Pagosa Springs? This would eventually change to 24 miles, and then to 23 miles as the routes would be improved. Similar changes would be seen to the other distances that were shown on these signs over the coming decades.
This sign was located on the northern side of the road. A few more different signs were erected on this side of the highway before the signs were moved to the other side. Sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s, the signs were moved to the southern side of the highway where the markers are still located today.
The car shown here has a license plate topper that reads “Press Club”. Take note of the rock under the left front wheel. A backup brake like this would have been a wise idea during this era.
