Comments & Discussion

This lot was purchased at an estate sale before it came to the Coloradotopia archives. It tells the tale of a family vacation to the Pikes Peak region in August of 1949.

The Pikes Peak Auto Highway and cog railroad were two of the most popular attractions of the era, and they still are popular today. There are tickets below for other toll roads which are no longer operated as toll roads. This includes the Seven Falls toll road and Cheyenne Mountain toll road. The road to Seven Falls still exists, and the top of the Cheyenne Mtn Highway is now a dirt road. However, neither of those two is operated as a toll road.

Pikes Peak

Seven Falls

Cheyenne Mountain Highway

There are two tickets for the Cheyenne Mountain Highway here. These represent a transition between toll road eras. Souvenir tickets were given in the first half of the century to those who made the trip to the top of Pikes Peak or the Cheyenne Mountain Highway. These tickets would not have given you access to the road. However, the regular tan toll road ticket DID give access to the road. It is unusual to see these types of tickets together. This souvenir ticket may have been one of the last ones given out.

The tickets below finish making up a common trip itinerary for the period. The Royal Gorge Bridge was built in 1929, and the Pikes Peak Railway had been an attraction here since the 1800s.
