Image Dating Comments

The “Colo. Dept. of Highways” text on the bottom of these signs allows them to be dated to 1953 or later because the department’s name was changed to this in 1953.

The rust and wear on the left sign signify that the signs were not brand new when this image was captured. The photo was likely taken in the late 1950s or 1960s.

Comments & Discussion

These signs were located on the western side of the road, opposite of the Climax Mine’s main property. The buildings shown in the background are associated with the Climax Mine which has operated on/off atop this pass for more than 100 years. This portion of the pass crosses the divide in an area where the divide runs east-west briefly. Thus, this section of the pass runs north-south, and those arrows are actually pointing to the north and south on that sign, rather than east and west as you might expect.

Full Scan (1200 DPI)

This full scan version with no cropping has been scanned at a higher DPI than the featured image on this page. This helps to show the underlying dot lines that make up the image. These are the results of the lithographic printing process that was used to achieve the color in this postcard.

Condition, Aging & Authenticity: The surface on the front is mostly wear-free, with a few subtle surface markings near the upper right. There is no spidering or major cracking in the surface. All 4 corners are in good shape. The backside shows no discoloration to the naked eye, and virtually no browning under magnification.
