Image Dating Comments

This photo comes from Herzog’s Flickr page where it has been dated Sept 5th, 2001. The partially broken sign that is shown here fits into the sequence of this sign becoming progressively more and more broken.

Comments & Discussion

This is believed to be the third sign here of nearly this exact shape and size, although each has been slightly different. The letter spacing and angulation of the upper corners are among the characteristics to note here when historically dating images of these signs.

In the case of this photo, the sign has suffered the first bout of damage to the upper left, and a chunk of the sign is now missing there. This damage was likely caused by the snow from a snowplow as it was pushed up against the sign.
