Image Dating Comments
This slide has an ink-stamped development date of July 1963 printed on it. The image is presumed to have been captured in July or sometime shortly before then.
This sign was likely added on Milner Pass sometime in the late 1950s.
Comments & Discussion
The sign that is shown here was taken down and modified with the wave-like pattern sometime between 1961 and 1963. This image can be compared with this one from 1961. Notice the spacing of the notches between panels, as well as the position of the rivet holes. The signposts appear to be the same in each of the images as well. It looks like they were probably sanded and given a coat of paint. The crack on the right post looks like it is the same crack that can be seen in the older photo from 1961.
Those empty rivet holes on the bottom would eventually be filled and painted over.
The image in this slide was captured a few moments apart from another photo in this archive. That will eventually be catalogued and uploaded as well. These slides were purchased in a lot that contained 4 Colorado Continental Divide slides. There were 2 photos from Loveland Pass and 2 from Berthoud Pass.
Condition, Aging & Authenticity: There are 4 good corners. A fair amount of brown aging can be seen coming in on both sides. The coloring would not be described as vibrant upon entry into the archive. It can’t be told for sure whether this is because the colors have faded or because they were not very good to begin with. Most Kodachrome slides of this age in the archive seem to be holding their color well, so this one likely just did not have great coloring to begin with. Some color enhancement has been done to the digital version shown here.
