1965 Wolf Creek Pass Continental Divide Sign Dynacolor Slide #CWO-J659

Brief Description

A brown Continental Divide sign is pictured here in 1965 alongside a historical marker on Wolf Creek Pass.

That plaque on the left had disappeared briefly earlier in the 1960s, but it returned in new or refurbished condition by 1963.

Image Dating Comments

This slide has an ink-stamped development date of July 1965. There is a fair amount of snow in the background, so it’s likely that this photo was taken earlier in the spring.

Comments & Discussion

This slide is underexposed and very dark. Enhancement work was done in order to brighten up the digital image after it was scanned, and this resulted in the version that is seen on this page.

Dynacolor slides are rare in the Coloradotopia archives. This is only approximately the second one upon the time it was entered into the archive. Dynacolor was an alternative and competitor to Kodak’s Kodachrome.

The sign that is shown here is very similar to signs that were added on Loveland Pass, Berthoud Pass, and other passes during the same era. Those signs had the same wooden design with the same fonts and the same pattern around the edges, but slightly different layouts.

Condition, Aging & Authenticity: The slide’s mount is in good condition with 4 good corners and no obvious discoloration due to aging. There is little/no fading of the inks on the mount.
