<< Previous Ticket | Next Ticket  >>

Brief Description

This lot of 3 tickets contains a single spectator ticket as well as a pair of tickets that are still attached together. These tickets would have given spectators access to the highway and competition area for the hill climb in 1947.

This happened to be the 25th annual running of the hill climb event.

Comments & Discussion

These tickets were purchased by a collector at a Chicago area estate sale approximately 9 years ago. They were held in that collection until being acquired by Coloradotopia in 2024.

The design of this ticket was updated from the 1946 tickets. The 1946 ‘member tickets’ that were used for this race had a die-cut shape and a green and red theme (see a photo on archive.org here).

The basic 1947 ticket design was kept for at least a few years after this race, but the color schemes changed each year. In 1950, the same design was used with a red and black theme, and advertising was also added (see here).

The road was still being maintained by the Forest Service in 1947 when this race was held, but would be taken over by the City of Colorado Springs the next year.

Condition, Aging & Authenticity: There is plenty of discoloration overall on these tickets. The attached pair is in much better condition than the single ticket. The version seen below was scanned at 1200 DPI. This shows a lot of the smaller white spots that appear to be a result of the blue ink starting to break up.
