1965 Loveland Pass Continental Divide Sign Photograph #CL-J65RB

Brief Description

This photograph was captured in 1965 at the top of Loveland Pass. It was purchased for the archive as a pair, along with CL-J65A.

The Eisenhower Tunnel was not built until 1973, so Highway 6 over Loveland Pass was still the main route over the Continental Divide when this photo was captured.

Info

Scanned with basic cropping, some color enhancement of the cropped version. Full scan version has no color enhancements.

Image Dating Comments

This photograph can be dated by the ink stamp on the back which reads “June 65R”, suggesting it was developed in June of 1965. While the background shows snow-covered mountains, you can trust by this woman’s t-shirt that this is a late spring or summer photo. The twin photo to this one shows that the snow in the background has melted significantly.

It is possible this photo was captured in May, but June is the most likely month.

Comments & Discussion

This is one of two unidentical twin photographs that were taken a few moments apart. The pair of images can be seen together lower on this page.

Pictured here, this looks like 2 parents with their daughter in front of the sign. This sign had been here for almost 10 years at the time this image was captured, and it appears to have made it without any big graffiti problems like the previous signs had.
